How Do You Install and Maintain Flange Bell Mouths Correctly?

Apr 17, 2025

Flange bell mouths are indispensable when connecting pipelines and equipment. Their installation is by no means a simple splicing but a rigorous project. During installation, every step, from the meticulous inspection in the early stage to the precise operation in the installation process, determines whether it can operate normally and is related to the stability of the entire system.

Installation

1. Pre-installation Inspection

Carefully check whether the specifications, dimensions, and materials of the flange bell mouths are in line with the design requirements to ensure that they are intact and free of defects such as cracks, sand holes, and air holes.

Check whether the surfaces of the flange and the bell mouth are flat and smooth. Confirm whether the specifications, and quantities of the supporting bolts, nuts, sealing gaskets, and other connecting parts are complete and whether their quality is qualified.

2. Pipeline Preparation

Clean the pipelines connected to the flange bell mouths to remove sundries, oil stains, rust, etc. inside the pipelines to avoid affecting the connection quality and fluid transportation.

Ensure that the ends of the pipelines are flat and free of deformation or damage. If the ends of the pipelines are not flat, cutting or grinding treatment is required to make them fit closely with the flange bell mouths.

3. Flange Connection

Align the flange bell mouths with the flanges of the pipelines or equipment so that the bolt holes match up perfectly. Next, insert the bolts and place the nuts on both ends of the bolts.

Use a wrench to gradually tighten the bolts in a diagonal pattern. This will ensure that the pressure between the flanges is evenly distributed, preventing poor sealing caused by uneven force. When tightening the bolts, do so in multiple steps, applying moderate force each time until reaching the specified torque value.

4. Adjustment and Inspection

After the installation is completed, check whether the connection between the flange bell mouths and the pipelines or equipment is firm and whether there is any looseness. At the same time, check whether there are signs of leakage at the sealing place. Detection methods such as pressure testing or applying soapy water can be used.

Confirm whether the direction of the bell mouth is correct, which should meet the requirements of fluid transportation to ensure that the fluid can pass through smoothly.

Maintenance

1. Regular Inspection

Conduct a regular visual inspection of the flange bell mouths to check whether the flange plates, bolts, nuts, and other components are corroded, rusted, deformed, or damaged.

Check whether there is leakage at the sealing place. If there is leakage, find out the cause in time. It may be caused by factors such as aging and damage of the sealing gaskets or looseness of the flange connection parts, and deal with the specific problems accordingly.

2. Cleaning and Maintenance

Regularly clean the surface of the flange bell mouths of dirt, dust, and oil stains, to keep the surface clean. A clean cloth or brush can be used for wiping. For stubborn stains, an appropriate cleaning agent can be used for cleaning, but be careful to avoid using cleaning agents that are corrosive to the flange materials.

For flange bell mouths exposed outdoors or in harsh environments, anti-corrosion measures should be taken, such as applying anti-corrosion paint, installing protective sleeves, etc., to extend their service life.

3. Timely Repair and Replacement

If any damage is found in the components of the flange bell mouths, such as cracks in the flange plates or deformation of the bell mouths, prompt repair or replacement is essential. For damaged components that cannot be repaired, new components that meet the specifications and requirements should be replaced to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the entire system.

In conclusion, the correct installation and maintenance of flange bell mouths are the cornerstone to ensure the normal operation of industrial pipeline systems. From the strict standardization during installation to the meticulousness during maintenance, every link is crucial. Only in this way can it continuously play a key role in the industrial field and contribute to the steady progress of production.
